The Hobe Sound Nature Center was the brainchild of Jackson Burke and Mrs. Elizabeth Kirby in 1972. He suggested the purpose and renovation of an old motel on U.S. One for a center where children and adults could learn more about their environment. To this day, the Jupiter Island Garden Club is very involved with financially supporting the Nature Center. It is a busy place with many school buses bringing the children from area schools to learn more about Nature and our local environment. Jupiter Island Garden Club is very proud to be a partner in the Hobe Sound Nature Center's education efforts.
From late May through late July, the Center staff and volunteers conduct sea turtle walks to observe nesting loggerheads. The female loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest from late March through September. Anytime from May to November you might be able to see the hatchlings making their way to the ocean. Leatherback and green sea turtles are sometimes encountered but due to their highly protected status, must be left alone.
During the summer, the Nature Center provides a Summer Environmental Camp program. Local children, ages 6 to 12, participate in a nature camp filled with fun and educational activities about wildlife and the environment. One of the most popular learning experiences each year is wading in the grassflats of the Indian River Lagoon. Children enjoy catching hermit crabs, pipefish, seahorses and much more. Several programs are also provided to local libraries, daycare centers and summer schools.
After the devastation of Hurricanes Francis and Jeanne, The Nature Center was forced to tear down their ruined center. Temporary trailers replaced the buildings, and we are happy to report that construction is underway to rebuild.
