Lady Helen Ramsey is generally given credit for founding the Jupiter Island Garden Club and I'm sure this is true. However, if I had to place a bet, I would say that one day Lady Ramsey's telephone rang and a voice said, "Dear Girl, we really must have a Garden Club on our Island. We must keep our ladies busy." And with those few words it all began.
The organizational meeting was held on February 22, 1952 at Lady Ramsey's home. There were fourteen founding members:
- Admiral Sir Gordon & Lady Ramsey Mrs. Neil Cowham
- Mrs. Joseph Reed Mrs. Carll Tucker
- Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Hornblower Mrs. Jay Jacobs
- Mrs. Fred Gordon Mrs. Hugo Dixon
- Mrs. E. Holle Faile Mrs. W. E. Oates
- Mrs. Warner Baird Mrs. Eugene Wilson
On December 14, 1957, the Jupiter Island Garden Club was proposed by the Greenwich Garden Club, seconded by the Garden Club of Palm Beach and became a member of the Garden Club of America.
